Zaccagnini

Perfect pair of medieval knights on horseback in Italian terracotta with elaborate majolica tin-glaze decoration by artisans at the house of Italian master Ugo Zaccagnini, Florence, circa 1935... 36cm high (14"), 31cm long (12"), both well marked and in excellent condition -- no lances to be found, but no flaws to the pottery or finish whatsoever. Trained as a sculptor, Zaccagnini (1868-1937) worked at Richard Ginori before opening his own studio with his sons in Florence in 1891, producing magnificent terracottas like this, exhibited at Milan and exported to markets worldwide -- especially to the United States, where his classical pieces were wildly popular in the 1920s and 30s...
